Producer: J.M. Raffault

Varietal(s): Chenin Blanc

Country: France

Region: Loire Valley

Appellation: Chinon

Nose: Wildflower, honey, pear skin, lemon, eraser, quince. Cool, stoney, appley

Palate: Classic honeyed, citrus and white orchard fruit, stoney, chalky minerality. Crunchy acid, firm weight. Some almond like flavors, cooked apple

Winemaking Notes: Organic farming, hand harvested. Indigenous yeast. Cold fermented in stainless steel. Lightly fined, unfiltered

Producer Notes: The Raffault family started farming grapes in Chinon 14 generations ago, in 1693. 50ha of vines. Rodolphe is currently in charge: his father, Jean Maurice was ambitious and had a huge impact on the winery and Chinon in general. He increased their vineyard holdings tenfold, and also championed single-vineyard bottlings, which is now a more common practice in Chinon. Also home to the largest cellar in the region, housing over 900 barrels

Area Notes: Only 5% of Chinon is planted to Chenin Blanc, so these are very rare bottles indeed. The rest of the region is Cab Franc.

Chinon is located at the Western edge of the Touraine district, just a few miles away from adjoining Anjou. Along with Bourgeuil, and Saumur over in Anjou, Chinon is one of a very few regions in the Loire with any sort of focus on red wine.

Where the Vienne and Loire meet we start to see mild Atlantic climate. Winds sweeps through the two valleys: vineyards and terraces are arranged east/west, and get great sun exposure.
