Fascinating wine from a tiny farm located completely off the grid and made totally by hand. Fresh and earthy, very good value
Nose: Ripe and dried red fruit, with earthy forest floor, root beer and cinnamon
Palate: Medium bodied and fresh, with medium acidity and some smooth tannins. The clay feels very present here, with lots of lush earthy notes of licorice, orange peel and milk chocolate accompanying the juicy red fruits.
Winemaking Notes: Dry farmed, manually harvested in baskets and manually pressed using a bamboo sieve. Fermented for 10-15 days with manual punchdowns, aged for 12 months in 300 year old Chilean clay amphorae. Unfined and unfiltered.
Producer Notes: Located so remotely that it can only be accessed via antique train followed by canoe, this 4ha vineyard is both organic and biodynamic, and located completely off the grid. Everything here is done by hand. Most vines are over 200 years old.
Area Notes: The Maule valley is one of Chile’s southernmost wine growing regions. As such, it has slightly lower temperatures, so its high sun exposure and warm days are tempered by cool nights. Soil types vary greatly throughout the region.
