Varietal(s): 100% Pelaverga
Nose: Fragrant and spicy, with strawberries and raspberries, blueberries, cherries, sweet spices. Floral, violet undertones.
Palate: Fresh, dry, peppery. Sour and sweet cherries, spice, bright acid and some slight tannic bite.
Producer Notes: La Bioca is a more recent addition to the Piedmont wine scene, and is the brainchild of Bisso Atanassov, a Bulgarian winemaker who recently came to Lange to make wine in 2012. They currently have 8ha of vineyards spread throughout the region. Very focused on low intervention and micro-vinification: obsessively knows and understands each individual parcel and location.
Area Notes: Rare grape, found only in Piedmont, and increasing in rarity. One of the last bastions is around the town of Verduno, in the northern part of Barolo just west of Alba along the Tanaro river. Winegrowers are constantly tempted to tear it up and replace it with Nebbiolo, especially because they are within the Barolo catchment. In 1995, it received its own DOC, specifically Verduno Pelaverga
