Producer: Cantine Barbera
Varietal(s): Perricone
Country: Italy
Region: Sicily
Appellation: Terre Siciliane
Nose: Red berries and geranium flowers
Palate: Medium body. Lots of dark fruit, fresh blackberry. Decent structure, medium tannins. Slate and graphite, good mineral character.
Winemaking Notes: Organic farming, hand harvested, natural yeast. 6 days skin contact fermentation in stainless, moves to Slavonian oak after malolactic begins. Matured 3 months in Slav oak on lees. Unfiltered, unfined
Producer Notes: Located in Menfi, west coast of Sicily. About one mile from the sea: this proximity is said to add salinity to the wines. Uses a small 44 pound wooden press to squeeze grapes. Marilena is a 3rd generation farmer, growing grapes her Grandpapa planted in the 20s. Varietals include Perricone, Nerello, Alicante, Nero D’Avola, Grillo. Good mix of soils, non-volcanic. Always uses minimal sulphur, no fining, rare filtration.
Area Notes: Menfi is a small DOC in NorthWest Sicily, located along the southern coast. Since 2014 they have allowed around 24 varietals. Benefits greatly from cooling coastal breezes that help protect from and counteract the blazing Sicilian sun. Good amount of coastal breezes also help do drive away rot and mildew.
