Varietals: 95% Jaen (Mencia), 5% Rufete
Nose: Wild Strawberry, raspberry, black pepper, tomato leaf
Palate: Cherry, violet, wild strawberry, pepper and spice. Light bodied and perfumed, with good acidity. Very glou-glou.
Winemaking Notes: Organic and biodynamic practicing, though not certified. Hand harvested grapes. Whole cluster pressed, left 2-3 days on skins. Wild fermented in stainless steel. Aged on lees for 8-9 months, undergoes full malolactic fermentation.
Producer Notes: Joao Tavares de Pina is a bon vivant winemaker in the Dao region, farming 40ha (13 of which are dedicated to wine) with biodynamic practices. He grows a great deal of cover crops, mainly chamomile and lavender, uses no chemical inputs, and has a carbon-neutral facility, self-sustained with photo-voltaic cells
Area Notes: Dao is located just south of the Douro valley, named after the Dao river which winds through the tough, crystalline granite soils of the area. Granite mountains surround the region to the north, east and south, creating a protected area that is mild, consistent and rather homogeneous in climate. Most vineyards are high altitude, along the slopes of the foothills, allowing greater diurnal range
