Rustic, alpine Nebbiolo blend from Northern Piedmont. Grippy tannins, racy fruit and crushed herbs.
Varietal(s): 40% Nebbiolo, 40% Croatina, rest is 10 other varietals
Nose: Red berries, mulberry, blackberry, floral and spicy. Lots of black pepper and brambly, woodsy notes.
Palate: Red fruits, pepper, tobacco and smoke. Crushed, stemmy alpine herbs. Fresh acid, good grippy tannin, medium to medium-plus body. Tons of energy and wild, rustic character
Winemaking Notes: Mostly 100+ year old vines, trained in the ‘Maggiorina’ method, upwards and towards the 4 points of the compass like a goblet. Hand harvested, high altitude, south facing vineyards, volcanic soil. Fermented and aged in stainless steel
Producer Notes: Taken over by Christoph Kunzli in 1998, Le Piane is located in the far Northeastern corner of Piedmont, in Boca. The vines and vineyard previously belonged to the last serious winemaker in the area. He has about 7ha of sustainably farmed vines, aiming for biodynamic production
Area Notes: Boca is located far to the North of Piedmont: it was once a vibrant wine-making area, but throughout the industrialization of the area lost most of its plantings, going from 40,000 ha in the 1950s to less than 10ha in 1998
